On the Eastern side of the Cairngorm Mountains, situated on the banks of the
River Dee,
lies the beautiful Aberdeenshire village of Ballater.
This charming victorian village is probably best known for it's famous royal
connection - Balmoral Castle, which lies some 8 miles to the west of the village.
The castle was originally purchased by Queen Victoria in 1852 for the sum of £30,000
and is now owned, and used as a holiday home by the current Royal Family.
Ballater village retains many of it's victorian buildings which are beautifully preserved,
along with more modern complexes, such as the nearby Craigendarroch Country Club.
The fully preserved victorian railway station is currently awaiting the delivery of a
restored Royal Carriage to complete its transformation into a victorian museum
and visitor centre.
