The Falkirk Wheel was officially opened in 2004 and has since become a major
tourist attraction with over 400,000 visitors each year.

Built to replace the original series of 16 locks which linked the Union and Forth and Clyde
canals, and closed since the 1930s, the wheel now allows the link to be navigated in
9 mins as opposed to 9 hours under the previous series of locks.
